Dead Or Alive 5 Last Round

We've heard it all.  DOA is too sexy.  Nobody takes DOA seriously.  The one thing nobody seems to want to admit is the DOA is actually a good game.

Just look at the series as a whole.  Each sequel only gets better, a rarity in any long-lived series.  The original DOA was a good game.  The second game improved the so much, the original is almost unplayable by comparison.  I missed the third game, but the fourth game improved on the second, mainly in the graphics department.  Then came DOA5, the biggest, fastest, most content heavily of them all.  They kept making updates and additions until we finally got DOA 5 Last Round.  While no one will admit it, DOA5 Last Round is a great game.

The graphics are vastly overhauled, going away from the doll look of previous entries to a more realistic look.  The speed of the game is even faster and the character roster is much bigger than any of the prequels.  The DLC system isn't a load of bull, because they gave you a complete game that can be fully enjoyed without the DLC.  The original DOA5 is just as fun as Last Round, which only makes Last Round that much rewarding.

As mentioned before, the character roster is huge.  Some people don't like that, because a bigger roster means there's a greater chance for clones and crappy characters to show up.  DOA5 Last Round doesn't really have that problem.  The cast is filled with characters who are likeable, mostly unique, and (most importantly) usable.  The player feels like they can truly win no matter who they pick.  That's a good thing.

Staying on the roster, they added a number of characters from the Virtua Fighter series.  Finally, those who dreamed of a match between Lei Fang and Pai Chan can watch that dream player out.  They also added the sexiest woman in video game history, Mai Shiranui from King Of Fighters (or Fatal Fury, if you're really old school).  That's right.  They took the sexiest woman from any game ever and put her in one of the sexiest games ever.  Honestly, the only thing wrong with the roster is that Ikkitousen's Ryofu Housen and Tekken's Asuka Kazama aren't on it.

Of course the game's perceived sexuality is why it has a bad reputation.  Even though the roster is roughly fifty percent male, the DOA series as a whole is one where hot women take the spot.  This is not a flaw, but what sets the game apart from the competition.  The men aren't bad characters by any stretch, but the women shine just little brighter.

The outfit are unfairly balanced between the men and women, as the women can have as many as four times the outfits as the men once all the DLC has been acquire.  This should not be a shock to anyone as this is how the series has always been.  The skimpiness of the women's outfits is often source of internet whiners, but the fact that there are conservative outfits for the women is often over looked.  Also, notice how these same people don't complain about some of the skimpier outfits for the males (Yes, you can find them if you looks hard enough).

The game does have DLC, but unlike a certain other game (cough, Street Fighter 5, cough) players have access to all of the essential modes right out the box.  A real story mode shouldn't have to be downloaded, something the creators of Street Fighter 5 didn't realize for some reason.  You have story mode, arcade mode, survival, tutorials and more from the moment you fire up the game.  No, you don't need Ayane's new bikini, but you do need story and arcade mode.  Even if the story just jumbled together nonsense (and it is), the creators of DOA 5 did a good job of knowing what to cut and what to leave in.  More companies should follow their example if they're going to rely on DLC.

Now as for the flaws, the only two that come to mind are the sometimes unfair combo system and the stagger system.  The combos can be unfair because if you start up a long combo, you have to pray the computer decides not to reverse out of it and hit you with its own.  The unfair part is that you can't do the same.  Once the computer starts a long chain, may as well grab some popcorn because all you can do is watch until the computer decides to let you fall.  It's not as bad here as in past games, but it's still there.  Hopefully, they fix this in DOA 6.  The stagger system can be irritating, but it's not a game breaker.

Yes, there is plenty of this, but...
...you can also have this...
...or meet halfway.
Just a little something for the ladies to drool over.
Proof that you can be sexy and functional at the same time.
Yes, it true.  Virtua Fighter Characters are here.
Oh, how long I've waited to see this match-up.

So to wrap it up, DOA5 Last Round is a game that flat-out gets it right.  Sure, it may be a little sexier than some players would like, but beneath the surface there is a great game.  In that way, DOA 5 Last Round does exactly what sequel should do.  It improves what series the has always done, which is give players a good fighting game and hot girls to go with it.  Not feeling ripped off is just a bonus.

Ten Female Characters Who Need to be In Dead Or Alive

When Dead Or Alive 5 came out, it was a dream come true because of two words.  Pai and Chan.  I always wondered what a fight between Pai and Lei Fang would look like, but never believed it would happen.  Yet there she was and so was one of my dream matches.

Then, after various repackagings, they made another dream come true.  Fatal Fury's Mai Shiranui joined the cast.  I mean, the hottest girl in the history of videogames (just admit it) just joined the cast of Dead Or Alive, even if just DLC for one game.  Fire and fan-throwing aside, there couldn't have been a more logical fit and bigger dream.  Or could there be?

If Mai and Pai can be in DOA5, just imagine who else can be there.  Yes, the could be obstacles in terms of mechanics, but they have Mai throwing fans and literally fanning flames.  So, without further delay, these are the ten women who need the DOA treatment.

10.  Nina Williams (Tekken)

What she lacks in looks, she makes up for with bone-crunching brutality.  Imagine what she would look like trading triangle holds with Bayman or brutal strikes with Christie.

9.  Saya Tsubaki (Kensei: Sacred Fists)

Yeah, she's not too cute (imagine Jackie Chan in girl shorts), but she uses kenpo, a fighting style you don't see too often in fighting games.  Her long strike chains are fun to watch and would fit well in DOA.  Plus, the fact that Kensei's style isn't too different from DOA5's much it so that her inclusion (or any Kensei character's, for that matter) wouldn't be too much of a pipe dream.

8.  Tifa Lockheart (Final Fantasy)

She's got the look, she's popular enough, and has a fighting style that could work if they do it right.  She's need a more fleshed-out move set, but her inclusion would be as much of a dream come true as Mai's.

7.  Cammy White (Street Fighter)

Her overall physical appearance would help her fit right in.  Plus, she could have a lot of rivals.  She could fight Ayane to see who has the better spinning kick, fight Christie to see who's the most badass female, chase down Rig and Donovan, or team up with Bayman (Hey, little girl).  Much like Tifa, her movelist will need expanding, but she's as brutal as Nina Williams and hotter to boot.

6.  Sakura Kasugano (Street Fighter)

This one is just for looks.  Ryu in dress (as she's been called) isn't nearly as unappealing as it sounds.  The girl is simply too cute to not be considered.  She could have some fun (and funny) interactions with Lei-Fang, Hitomi, Kasumi, Mila, and Ayane.  Plus, she would have yet another Ryu to drool over.

5.  Leona (King of Fighters)

A tough-looking hot chick whose inclusion would be a direct result of Mai's.  If they can put in Mai, why not her?  Just imagine the interactions she could have with other, especially Bayman.

4.  Katsuragi (Senran Kagura)

They already have some Senran Kagura outfits.  Why not have a whole character?  Her mechanics might be a challenge to work in, but of all the Senran Kagura characters, her fighting style makes the most sense.  She could simply kick her opponents into oblivion.  A kick battle against Rig or Zack could be interesting.  Also, they let Ayane show up in the most recent Senran Kagura game, so why not borrow one of theirs?

3.  Eileen  (Virtua Fighter)

The already have Virtua fighter characters, so why not add the one with a fighting style that the others don't have.  Honestly, it's a surprise she hasn't been added yet.

2.  Asuka Kazama (Tekken)

Cute?  Check.  Sexy outfit?  Check.  Good fighting style?  Check.  Lots of potential rivals?  Check.  She's the complete package.  Adding Asuka (as well as Nina and a few others) to the roster and hinting at a crossover with Tekken is possibly the best thing they could do.

1.  Ryofu Housen (Ikkitousen)

They've already added Mai Shiranui, the hottest female in videogame history.  Why not add the hottest female in all of anime to the roster.  Asuka Kazama (or anyone from Tekken for that matter) would be would a better overall addition, but Ryofu (and maybe a few other Ikkitousen characters, as well) would be the ultimate dream come true.

Honorable Mentions:

Whip (King of Fighters)

She'd be a covered-up, but still hot female to mix things up.  Plus, a weapon-user could provide a new type of challenge, though it might be tough to work into the DOA system.

Lili Rochefort (Tekken)

A throwdown between her and Helena (two rich blondes) could be fun to watch.  Also, she has a style that isn't represented (Ayane is the only character that feels close to it).

Chun Li (Street Fighter)

With Mai Shiranui already on the roster, they can take advantage of a dream match Capcom vs. SNK made come true and push it to sexy new levels.

Makoto (Street Fighter)

Her fighting style wouldn't be total bull crap in the DOA system and her choke throw looks so brutal, it could make Bass and Bayman cower in fear.  She and Hitomi could have a hard-hitting battle.

Laura Matsuda (Street Fighter)

She has the DOA look and, like Makoto, her style wouldn't be total bull crap.

Christie Montiero (Tekken)

Sexy and would bring capoeira to the roster, though Lisa has some capoeira-style moves.

Nakoruru (Samurai Shodown)

Another cute, fully-dressed weapon-user.  Whip is hotter, but Nakoruru's short-ranged weapon and moveset would work better in the DOA system.

There you have it.  Ten females and seven honorable mentions who need the DOA treatment.  Whether it be as DLC for DOA5 or as guest/DLC in future DOA games.  Are any of these suggestions too wild?  Who would you add?
